100 Days of Blue
Day 1
The sky was still tinged with pink as I left home this morning, the mist heavy in the valleys after yesterday evening’s downpour. Chasing the rosey warm glow with the air temperature barely 7c the day promises at least a little sunshine, and maybe even warmth. Looking forward to the warmth of friendship later when we gather to swim, or at least some warm connection with each other in blue space and a paddle.
Coming down into the harbour I’m struck by the silence, and then the birdsong. Not all of it is harmonious, but am thrilled to be greeted by the geese and am reminded of Mary Oliver’s poem ‘wild geese’, and our connectedness to all around us. Their echoed voices certainly making themselves heard at just after 5am! The small gathering of white doves make more peaceful companions, and down on the beach finches and tits dance around my toes after a salty wake up call.
The light begins to change and looking up I see the iridescent glow of the sun on a boat, and hear the distant hum of a fishing boat as the working community head out to sea. Other than that all is quiet, save the sound of the sea caressing the pebbles, their percussive song quieting my busy early mornings mind. As I sit gazing meditatively across the beach my eyes are drawn to the sturdy walls of the harbour. Safety, security, sanctuary. Where is it found?
Then hearing that familiar honk…. looking skyward geese fly noisily and closely overhead. Community. Unity. Direction.
Thankful for today’s geese. And for early morning blue space.
