Clarity
Will you wait for the mist to clear and reveal the horizon, or set sail with courage?
Finding courage to step away from the shore
When I woke this morning it was hard to know for a few minutes whether the lack of view from the window was condensation on the inside or fog on the outside. Establishing that the sea mist had in fact rolled in and the trees on the opposite side of the valley were, for a now anyway, completely obscured, I was suddenly very keen to get to the river before the mist gradually unveiled its bright and beautiful blues.
I could hear mum's voice in my head as I walked through town - 'Don't go out in the cold with wet hair!'. I guess it was concern left over from the day when my 15 year old self arrived at school with frozen hair, much to my and my friend’s amusement! It made me giggle to remember it, as all round me the late Georgian and early Victorian granite houses and shops looked distinctly Dickensian!
The fog brought heightened awareness of other senses - loud and melodious blackbirds, the scent of fresh sawdust, the hum of diesel engines, and a certain numbness from quietly sitting on a cold post, oblivious to the harbour master and others quietly going about their chores The mist lingered, but there was warmth in the sun as I sat, to match that of early morning smiles.
I loved the quote in the bookshop window: ‘You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.’ Andre Gide. Sometimes finding the courage to step away from the shore is even more acute when the way ahead is emerging, to be discovered, or even simply opaque!
I wonder what wisdom the misty image holds for you?
